The aerodynamics/stability & control subgroup focuses primarily on the overall aerodynamic design of the aircraft, including sizing of wings and stabilizing surfaces. Soon after competition rules are released, a MATLAB score optimization code is written to simulate aircraft performance and indicate the optimal aircraft configuration to score the highest. The subgroup refines the indicated top scoring aircraft configuration into an aerodynamic design that is efficient and will not cause problems with manufacturing. The team uses programs like XFLR5 to ensure the aerodynamic design is stable and has properly sized control surfaces. Once the prototype and competition aircraft are constructed, this subteam plans flight tests and analyzes collected flight data to ensure success at competition.
