The Research and Development Sub-Team designs experiments to test the strength, ductility, and durability of materials used in the plane, including wood, foam, and metal. They collaborate closely with the I&M team during construction. By testing materials like balsa and spruce, they aim to find the best option for the aircraft frame. Using the Student Design Center, they identify failure points in materials. They also test wing strength with a prototype in a wind tunnel to assess weak points. This Sub-Team is ideal for mechanical, material science, civil, and aerospace engineering majors, but anyone interested in structural design is welcome to join.
